This post is a reflection and response to a question I recently received after sharing my Year in Review (2024): How did you manage to read 45 books*?
(*the image from goodreads was made earlier, than I finished 4 more books:D)
The short answer? I’m not entirely sure! But what I do know is what works for me to truly enjoy reading.
I hope these reflections help you discover or enhance your own reading habits – if, of course, it’s something you genuinely love to do!
What Works for Me in Reading
Don’t force yourself to stick to a book that doesn’t resonate
If a book slows me down and demotivates me, I simply move on.
I start reading, and if it feels entirely off – be it the content or just the wrong mood for the day – I either pass it on to someone else or set it aside.
Choose based on your mood
Think about what you’re in the mood for: to learn, relax, laugh, cry, etc.
Last year, I experimented with reading two books at the same time, choosing which one to read depending on my mood. It worked smoothly.
After work, I was often so exhausted that reading new, intensive information felt like torture! 😄
“Simple” books have their place
I don’t want to, and honestly can’t, read only serious or philosophical works.
My brain needs a recharge.
Sometimes, reading is like watching a series for me – it’s all about unwinding.
Consider reading as relaxation, not a challenge
I’ve always loved reading – sometimes less, sometimes more.
But last year, books became my new comfort zone, a way to unwind from work or intrusive thoughts.
Approach reading as an experience
Every book reveals something new and interesting.
It’s like visiting a new city or country – or having a conversation with fascinating people when you don’t quite have the energy for real-life interaction.
Books are my greatest allies
For me, the question isn’t how to read more – it happens naturally, organically.
And if you’ve tried reading but find it torturous – don’t worry!
You don’t have to chase after bookworms. Instead, find your genre or preferred format – be it audiobooks, paperbacks, or e-books. Or maybe podcasts and videos bring you far more joy?
That’s totally fine too. 🫶 If you love reading, please share your tips in comments below. And of course, let’s connect in Goodreads.
